City 101
What is City 101?
Ever wondered what really goes into keeping Steamboat Springs running every day? From plowing snowy streets and running public transit, to managing parks, public safety, and long-term planning—City 101 is your backstage pass to municipal operations.
“Understanding what goes on behind the scenes builds respect and trust,” said Grants & Project Management Specialist and City 101 Program Director, Ginger Scott. “City 101 is an opportunity for residents to see the teamwork, planning, and passion that keep Steamboat Springs safe, functional, and thriving.”
Launched in 2014, City 101 is your chance to see it all up close and personal. Through tours, forums, and hands-on activities, participants learn how departments work together, how tax dollars are invested, and just how much city employees care about this community. Sessions are held on select Wednesdays between December 3 and May 27, typically from 8:30am to 3:30pm.
Participants consistently walk away with a deeper appreciation for the city’s services, and a stronger connection to the people who make it all work. Past participants say the program completely changed how they view the city:
- “I now see it as a whole and how all the departments fit together. The effort and commitment by staff is significant.”
- “I’ve lived here for 36 years and have always been impressed, but now I’m even more impressed. The knowledge and passion staff bring to their jobs is incredible.”
- “It’s not simple to run a city. It takes a lot of staff, equipment, and coordination – but Steamboat does it well.”
- “Our city gets a lot done with a minimal budget, and the best part is how much employees love their jobs.”
