Steamboat Springs, Colorado–March 16, 2026-The City of Steamboat Springs published the final January 2026 sales, use, accommodation, and short-term rental (STR) tax report. January 2026 sales tax collections were 2.42% lower than January 2025, representing a decrease of $113,190. The city budgeted a 1% decrease from 2025 budget, which means actual collections fell short of budget in January by 1.42%.
Compared to January 2025, several categories experienced notable declines in tax collections. Sporting Goods decreased by 14.45%, Utilities decreased by 10.46%, Liquor Stores and Marijuana fell by 13.20%, Grocery Stores by 7.74%, and Restaurants decreased by 4.42% from the previous year.
Accommodation Tax is dedicated revenue used to fund development of improvements and amenities that enhance the community identity, environmental sustainability, and economic health of Steamboat Springs; acquisition of real property for parks, recreation, and open space purposes; and preservation of the city’s natural resources. In January 2026, tax collections were 3.25% higher than January 2025, which is an increase of $11,454.
Short-Term Rental tax (STR tax) is dedicated for use to increase the stock of affordable and attainable housing by providing incentives and contributions to facilitate the development of affordable and attainable housing at locations including, but not limited to, Brown Ranch and to provide funding for infrastructure associated with affordable and attainable housing, including without limitation, energy, stormwater, water, wastewater, and multi-modal transportation. STR tax collections for January 2026 were 1.14% higher than January 2025.
Building Use Tax is utilized to fund capital projects for the City of Steamboat Springs. Use tax collections can fluctuate based on building permits issued, reconciliations completed, and the size and number of developments within the city. In January 2026, net use tax collections increased by 28.27%, for a total of $19,968.
