Year-to-Date Collections Continue To Trail Budget

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-November 3, 2025-The city has published the preliminary September 2025 sales, use, accommodation, and STR tax report, which are 0.77% higher compared to the September 2024 collections, or an increase of $24,792. 

Year-to-date sales tax collection is 2.57% more than year-to-date through the same period last year. The city budgeted a 3% increase in sales tax for 2025, therefore collections are trailing behind budget. 

When comparing this September to the same month last year the notable changes in collections by category are in Miscellaneous Retail at 13.63%, Construction at -13.86% and Marijuana at -10.12% over last September.

Accommodation Tax is dedicated to maintenance of improvements and amenities that enhance the acquisition of real property for parks, recreation, and open space purposes, and preservation of the city’s natural resources. September collections are 2.03% lower compared to the same period last year. This brings the year-to-date increase to 0.97% over last year which is lagging behind budget. 

Short-Term Rental tax (STR tax) is dedicated for use to increase the stock of affordable and attainable housing by providing incentives and contributions to facilitate the development of affordable and attainable housing at locations including, but not limited to, Brown Ranch and to provide funding for infrastructure associated with affordable and attainable housing, including without limitation, energy, stormwater, water, wastewater, and multi-modal transportation. September STR tax collection is 1.16% lower compared to September 2024 or a decrease of $7,664. 

Building Use Tax is used to fund capital projects for the City of Steamboat Springs. This tax fluctuates depending on building permits issued, use tax reconciliations completed, and the size and number of developments in the city. September net use tax collections were up 103.85%, or an increase of $368,033. Year-to-date collections for 2025 are significantly lower than 2024.  At the end of September, collections are 39.54% less than the same timeframe in 2024.
