[ARCHIVED] Flooding Closes First Segments of Yampa River Core Trail

Core Trail Flooding - News Flash

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-April 23, 2024-As temperatures rise and water flows driven by spring runoff continue to ebb and flow, Parks & Recreation has had to close sections of the Yampa River Core Trail at the railroad underpasses between the 9th Street Bridge and Howelsen Hill, and between Fetcher and Rotary Parks, due to high water and flooding.

During spring runoff, rivers and creeks will rise and fall requiring sections of the trail to be closed as water exceeds the banks and floods the pathway. As flows fluctuate, there will be closures and re-routes across the trail system.

Over the coming weeks, trail users should watch for trail closures at:

  • Railroad underpass between 9th Street & Howelsen Hill (currently closed)
  • Railroad underpass between Fetcher & Rotary Parks (currently closed)
  • US40 underpass at Walton Creek
  • US40 underpass at Fish Creek
  • 13th Street underpass at the Bud Werner Memorial Library

These sections and other areas may open/close as the river reaches peak flows over the coming weeks. Please obey all closures, follow the detour routes, and do not try to cross flooded trails or railroad tracks.

According to the USGS gauge at the 5th Street Bridge, the Yampa River surpassed 1,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) on Sunday, April 14, and has remained at a similar level. Rivers are anticipated to continue to grow with forecasted warm weather and precipitation throughout the week.
