[ARCHIVED] Howelsen Hill Celebrates Closing Day March 24

HH Closing Day - News Flash

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-March 18, 2024-North America’s Oldest Operating Ski Area, Howelsen Hill, will be wrapping up its 108th winter season with Ski Free Sunday and a Closing Day Celebration set for Sunday, March 24.

“Mother Nature gifted us with consistent snow, Tube Howelsen returned for a second slide, and the hill hosted numerous first-rate events including the NCAA Skiing Championships for a record ninth time,” said Howelsen Hill Ski & Rodeo Manager Brad Setter. “The ski area’s popularity continues to grow, and our closing celebration pays tribute to that same zest for skiing that has made the ski hill an industry institution.”

Carl Howelsen would be proud of the passion and spirit that radiates from his namesake hill and how it has become the community gathering place for so many people over the past century. Howelsen embraced the joy and fun of winter and changed the way Steamboat Springs celebrates these snowy months. Howelsen Hill’s Closing Day Celebration is a culmination of another season that brought smiles to so many faces.

On Closing Day, Steamboat Springs’ hometown hill will celebrate with a variety of entertaining activities both on and off the snow. On the final day, snow lovers will enjoy free skiing and riding as part of the ski area’s Ski Free Sunday program from 10am to 4pm. Simply visit the ticket office to claim your free ticket.

The Rat Lake Pond Skim Competition skims in for a second season from 12 PM to 2 PM. Advanced registration and a signed waiver are required to participate. Visit steamboatsprings.net/closingday for details and to register. The event is capped at 100 participants, so register today! Prizes will be awarded for best skims and costumes (which are highly encouraged).

The Outrun Snack Bar will feature end-of-season food and drink specials all day. The grill will be heating up with $7 burger and $6 brat specials while they last. Quench your thirst at the outdoor bar with deals on specialty cocktails, well and house wines, margaritas, and beer. Play yard games and dance the day away with live music from Bootleg & Derecho from 10am-12pm and 2pm to 4pm, respectively.

“It goes without saying that the staff at Howelsen Hill is one of the best and again this season served up great skiing and riding for the community,” continued Setter. “To see how this community embraces the sport and continues to make this local hill a community staple blows us all away – thank you for sharing the season with us!”

Howelsen Hill Ski Area is owned and operated by the City of Steamboat Springs and is a skiing institution across the community, Colorado, and the nation. Skiing since 1915, the ski area has been the training ground for 100 Winter Olympians, 33 members of the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame, 15 members of the National Ski Hall of Fame, athletes from the acclaimed Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club and generations of families.
