STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-July 17, 2023-After absorbing the cost for many years, the city ports for electric vehicles (EV) charging will shift to a paid basis at all municipal outlets starting August 1, 2023.
“Originally, the charging ports were provided at no cost as an incentive to increase EV usage,” said Facilities Manager Eric Friese. “That definitely worked as EVs have become extremely popular in the Yampa Valley, and we’ve now reached a level where the shift is necessary.”
The city will implement a $0.15 per KWH when EV’s are utilizing a city ChargePoint charger. Prior to the change, the fee was paid out of the general fund and that cost has continued to grow annually.
The fee will cover the city’s cost for electricity at those stations, while still providing a place for EV’s to charge. Electric rates have increased significantly, and the proposed fee matches other organizations in town, like Yampa Valley Electric Association and Routt County, that have a similar charge.
Currently, the city provides 6 Level II EV charging stations, 12 ports at the Rodeo Ground, and 1 port behind Centennial Hall/Elkins House. Additionally, several new ports will come online with the new city hall and downtown fire station. All charting ports can be accessed through ChargePoint. Always check to see if overstay charges apply before charging.
Since 2007, Chargepoint has focused solely on offering the best EV charging experience for everyone involved in the shift to electric mobility. Now, the world’s largest and most open EV charging network in North America, Yampa Valley residents can plug into 21 ports across the city via the Chargepoint network.
