STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-June 7, 2023-The Steamboat Springs City Council recognized and proclaimed the month of June 2023 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and Two-Spirit (LGBTQIA2S+) Pride Month throughout the City of Steamboat Springs.
“Across the city organization, we strive to create an atmosphere of equity, inclusion and diversity,” said City Manager Gary Suiter. “Pride Month provides an opportunity to shine light on the diversity enjoyed in our city and the collective efforts so many groups are working towards.”
The city officially adopted the Pride Proclamation during the City Council meeting on June 6, 2023. In addition, the city will participate in the 3rd Annual Yampa Valley Pride Festival hosting a booth on the Routt County Courthouse lawn during Pridefest from noon to 3pm on Saturday, June 10. The Steamboat Springs Police Department will attend many of the events during Paint the Town with Pride leading up to the festival.
Two city employees are members of the current Leadership Steamboat class, a program facilitated by the Steamboat Springs Chamber. This year’s mission is to cultivate safety and inclusivity for the LGBTQIA2S+ community in Routt County and to raise funds for a future resource center.
The experience of LGBTQIA2S+ residents of Routt County is widely variant, but the Community RoundTable Project revealed several prominent themes throughout the information gathered. The city participated and was one of the entities to help fund the project. The report can be found here.
“While we have made strides in the right direction as an organization, there is still much work to do to ensure that everyone feels represented across our community and is free to be themselves,” continued Suiter. “I urge everyone to attend Pridefest to discover all that we share in common and just how special our community can be when everyone feels welcomed.”
LGBTQIA2S+ Pride Month is a month dedicated to celebration and commemoration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender pride. Pride Month began after the Stonewall riots, a series of gay liberation protests in 1969, and has since spread thoroughout and outside of the United States.
