STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-May 24, 2023-The Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue B-Shift will be hosting an open house this weekend at the Mountain Fire Station sharing information on Wildfire Preparedness.
“Anything property and homeowners can do now, will go a long way when the flames are at their door,” said Fire Chief Chuck Cerasoli. “Unfortunately, wildfires are increasingly getting closer and closer to the Yampa Valley and as we’ve seen from the smoke from Canadian fires this week, can have lasting impacts on our livability.”
Interested individuals can stop by any time between 10am to 2pm on Saturday, May 27 at the Mountain Fire Station (2600 Pine Grove Road). SSFR Wildland Fire Crew will share information and tips on the following:
- 2023 Wildfire Outlook
- Reducing Wildfire Risk in the Home Ignition Zone (HIZ)
- Site Visit Planning
- Evacuation Planning
- Emergency Alerts
- Emerald Mountain Mitigation Project
Research shows there are proven methods for preparing properties for withstanding the devastating impacts of a wildfire. This Prep Day, you have the power to protect the part of the community that means the most to you and your family by eliminating vulnerabilities in the HIZ, particularly the immediate 5-foot zone around your residence.
“While we wish we had enough resources to station firefighters in place to protect every home threatened by wildfire, we just don’t,” continued Cerasoli. “That way it’s imperative that you make sure your property/home is set up for its best defense should the unthinkable come your way.”
Wildfire Community Preparedness Month is a national campaign that encourages people and organizations everywhere to come together to take action to raise awareness and reduce wildfire risks. It is held in the United States and Canada in May and focuses on what residents can do on and around their home to help protect against the threat of wildfires.
