STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-May 3, 2023-As the valley floor continues to melt and dry out, the Open Burn Season for the Steamboat Springs Area Fire Protection District will come to an end today. Typically, the Open Burn period runs each year from November 1 through April 15, but this year was extended several weeks due to abundant snow.
“We’ve seen conditions change quite a bit at lower elevations prompting the close of the open burn season,” commented Doug Shaffer, Fire Marshal for Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue. “We appreciate everyone adhering to the burn criteria during the burn season.”
At this time, burning should only be conducted that is essential to agricultural burns such as ditch burning in conjunction with irrigation, weed control and production of crops.
“Even with all the snow this winter and wet spring conditions, we must remain vigilant as we head toward the summer wildfire season,” stressed Shaffer. “As we’ve seen all too often, it only takes a spark for something to grow out of control quickly.”
