STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-March 1, 2023-The city has published the preliminary January 2023 sales, use, and accommodation tax report. The January 2023 sales taxes for the City of Steamboat Springs are 12.57% higher compared to the January 2022 collections or an increase of $502,326. For the past 5 years, January collections represent about 10% of annual collections.
When comparing this January to the same month last year the notable increases in collections by category are in sporting goods at 19.07%, restaurants at 22.8%, and utilities at 49.75% over last January. Increases were seen in most geographical area categories.
Accommodation Tax is primarily dedicated to local trail projects. A small amount each year is dedicated towards the marketing of these projects and capital improvements at Haymaker. January collections are 5.87% higher compared to the same period last year.
Short-Term Rental tax (STR tax) is dedicated for use to increase the stock of affordable and attainable housing by providing incentives and contributions to facilitate the development of affordable and attainable housing at locations including, but not limited to, Brown Ranch and to provide funding for infrastructure associated with affordable and attainable housing, including without limitation, energy, stormwater, water, wastewater, and multi-modal transportation. January STR tax collection is $1,314,227.
Building Use Tax is used to fund capital projects for the City of Steamboat Springs. This tax fluctuates depending on building permits issued, use tax reconciliations completed, and the size and number of developments in the City. January net use tax collections total $59,513.
