Steamboat Springs, Colorado-March 19, 2026-The City of Steamboat Springs has updated its sign code to improve clarity, streamline permitting procedures, and better support both city staff and the development community.
"These updates help us create a permit process that is easier for applicants and more consistent for staff,” said Planning & Community Development Senior Planner Toby Stauffer “Our goal is to make sure people can understand the rules, get clear guidance, and move through the process efficiently."
The revised code, which amends Article 5 (Signs) and Article 7 (Development Processes) of the Community Development Code (CDC), reflects enhancements made in conjunction with the updated CityView Sign Permit process.
The original Sign Code overhaul took effect on January 1, 2021, marking the first major update since 2010. As the city worked with applicants under the revised code and through the newer CityView digital permitting system, staff and community partners identified several opportunities to increase efficiency, accuracy, and ease of use. The 2025/2026 Sign Code Update incorporates those improvements and key updates include:
- Updated permit procedures, including a new classification system for Structural and Non‑Structural signs, each with its own review pathway
- Adjusted Incentives to further encourage their use.
- Revised Historic Sign standards to improve alignment and consistency with other sign types.
- Small Yard Signs are now exempt from permit requirements, while still subject to enforceable standards.
- Minor language clarifications throughout the code to improve readability and consistency.
- Updated Minor and Major Adjustment criteria to ensure clearer applicability and improved administration.
To support community members and businesses, the city has also launched a refreshed Sign Information webpage, which provides:
- Where to find rules and standards for all sign types
- How to apply for a sign permit through CityView
- Answers to commonly asked questions
- Guidance on portable/sandwich board signs
