[ARCHIVED] 37 Years of Excellence in GFOA Financial Reporting

GFOA 2026 NewsFlash

Steamboat Springs, Colorado-February 9, 2026-The City of Steamboat Springs has received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its 2024 Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR).

“This recognition reflects the commitment our entire organization has to responsible financial stewardship,” said Finance Director Kim Weber. “Our team works hard to ensure the city’s financial reporting is accurate, transparent, and accessible, and this award reinforces the high standard we strive to uphold year after year.”

Of the Colorado agencies reviewed, 33 organizations were selected for this prestigious recognition in annual financial reporting. Of those recognized statewide, only 15 have achieved the milestone for 35 or more years, including Steamboat Springs, which has now earned the honor for an impressive 37 consecutive years.

According to GFOA, the Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

“Earning this award for the 37th straight year speaks volumes about the professionalism and dedication of our finance team,” said City Manager Tom Leeson. “Their work helps build trust with our community and ensures residents can have confidence in how public funds are managed.”

Established in 1945, GFOA’s Certificate of Achievement program encourages state and local governments to exceed minimum accounting requirements by producing comprehensive annual financial reports that promote transparency and full disclosure.

Reports are evaluated by GFOA staff and the GFOA Special Review Committee, a panel of public finance professionals including auditors, preparers, academics, and other experts in governmental reporting. Participating governments typically submit reports within six months of the fiscal year’s end, followed by a review process that typically takes an additional four to six months.

The City of Steamboat Springs’ report was judged to meet the program’s high standards, clearly communicating the city’s financial position and demonstrating a strong spirit of full disclosure.
