[ARCHIVED] Ongoing Fire Mitigation Work Brings Closures to Lane of Pain

Lane of Pain Closure - News Flash

Fuel Reduction Project On Emerald Mountain Continues Next Week

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-July 11, 2025- Wildfire mitigation and fuel reduction has been at the forefront of recent efforts for many agencies and these vital initiatives continue with planned mitigation work on Emerald Mountain this summer.

Wildland Firefighters with Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR) have continued work on Emerald Mountain in recent weeks, working to reduce fuels along the upper portions of Blackmer Drive. Beginning next week, crews will shift their efforts to areas along Lane of Pain.

SSFR has contracted with Forrester and Associates to remove hazard trees and reduce fuel loads approximately 50 feet off each side of Blackmer Road along Lane of Pain. This reduction of fuels will help protect ingress and egress for emergency access to the Emerald Mountain radio towers and recreational trails.

To safely perform this work, crews will be closing areas along Lane of Pain. Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 14, and anticipated to last approximately one week. We ask that trail users avoid the area and respect all closures and detours.

This project is part of a four-year campaign funded through a grant provided by the Colorado State Forest Service and its Forest Restoration & Wildfire Risk Mitigation Grant Program. The grant also allowed the department to purchase a chipper and chipper box truck to aid in these efforts.
