STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-November 29, 2023-The next significant winter storm is expected to impact the region beginning tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 29, and will bring precipitation off and on through the weekend and into Monday.
With snow starting to pile up and a regular storm cycle on the horizon, the city will be looking more and more like a winter wonderland and would like to remind business and property owners of their sidewalk snow removal responsibilities.
“Getting around town is important not only for residents, but for our winter guests who travel from near and far to enjoy our mountain community,” said Community Services Supervisor Krista Amatuzio. “Clearing the roads is a coordinated effort by the city and we need everyone’s assistance to ensure sidewalks are also passable.”
Business and property owners are responsible for removing snow from the sidewalks in front of or adjacent to their building between November 20 and April 15 under the Steamboat Springs Municipal Code. In addition, Americans with Disability Acts (ADA) regulations require a minimum width of four feet. be provided on all sidewalks. Clearing snow from your property into the street or adjacent parking spots is not permitted.
The Code section is referenced here and failure to adhere could result in a citation including: $50 First Offense plus $20 Surcharge, $100 Second Offense plus $20 Surcharge, $200 Third Offense and subsequent Offenses plus $20 Surcharge.
With the approaching storm, mountain travel will be challenging Thursday night into Monday with snow accumulations first impacting the southern mountains followed by the northern mountains. The long duration of this event will see accumulations slowly add up through the period.
As we all know, in this mountain town, the snow falls in feet, not inches. Steamboat Springs’ snow is abundant and so unique that it carries its own trademark. With this much snow, it takes a coordinated effort by the entire community to handle the powder.
The city would like to thank everyone in advance for their cooperation in keeping sidewalks safe and clear of snow. Snow removal complaints should be directed to Routt County Dispatch’s non-emergency number, 970.879.1144.
