[ARCHIVED] Improvements Slated For Bear River Bike & Skate Parks

Design NewsFlash

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-August 3, 2023-The City of Steamboat Springs Parks & Recreation Department is in the initial stages of redesign and expansion of the bike and skate parks at Bear River Park. Funding for the design work was obtained through the city’s annual CIP budget process. Parks staff is requesting additional CIP funds for construction, tentatively scheduled in 2024.

“We are really looking forward to the additions and improvements that are planned for Bear River Park”, stated Matt Barnard, Parks & Recreation Development Manager. “The new skate park will mirror the existing design with concrete bowls and smooth terrain, while the bike park will include a bike skills park with obstacles to foster youth and new rider development”.

Calling all bikers and skaters! Parks & Recreation is looking for community voices from youth and young adults to join the design team and guide the park expansion and improvements project. A steering committee made up of designers from Team Pain Skate Parks, city staff, and youth design team members will meet later this month to discuss concepts for the reimagined parks.

Children grades Kindergarten through 12th, especially those living in the west Steamboat Springs neighborhoods, who are interested in participating in the design process are encouraged to apply. To apply for the design team, simply send your name (first, last), age, physical address, and phone number to parksandrecprojects@steamboatsprings.net

Those interested in participating can also visit www.steamboatsprings.net/bearriverpark for additional information and instructions. Those interested in serving on the design team should submit their application no later than Friday, August 11. Those selected to serve on the committee will be notified by Monday, August 14.

Participants will be asked to join two design team meetings. The first meeting is currently scheduled for Thursday, August 17 at the Steamboat Springs Police Department Community Room at 2027 Shield Drive. Skaters will join and provide input from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM and bikers from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Light refreshments will be provided.

Phase 1 of Bear River Park focused on minimal amenities, before the full scope of the park was developed through the 2016 Bear River Park Master Plan. Phase 2 of the park plan calls for improvements and additions to the existing bike and skate parks.
