STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-March 17, 2023-The Steamboat Springs Police Department (SSPD) investigated a threat made earlier this week by a student at the Steamboat Springs High School.
“The Police Department and Steamboat Springs School District take all threats seriously,” said Interim Police Chief Mark Beckett. “I would like to remind the community that threatening educational institutions is a serious crime and an act we’ll respond to immediately.”
The SSPD was made aware of a high school student making threats to bomb the school this week after several anonymous Safe2Tell tips were received on Tuesday, March 14. Investigators worked with school officials and interviewed several parties. Law enforcement concluded there is no longer a threat to the school. The case has been submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for charging.
“We’re glad students and parents are using the Safe2Tell tip line to report concerning actions or behaviors,” continued Beckett. “Getting an early alert like this is what the tip line is made for and allows our officers to intercede quickly.”
“We are committed to and have a duty to investigate every threat against our schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Celine Wicks. “Additionally, we have threat assessment procedures in place to identify risks. These processes are in line with best practices and have proven to be an effective tool to determine the level of potential risk and initiate early intervention and prevention.”
SSPD and SSSD encourage anyone who is concerned about school safety to utilize Safe2Tell (Safe2Tell.org). Safe2Tell is an anonymous way for students, parents, and the community to report any issues concerning safety or the safety of others.
All persons accused of crimes are presumed innocent until and unless their guilt is established beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
