[ARCHIVED] Regional Law Enforcement & Fire Agencies Conduct Training

Active Shooter Training NewsFlash

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-April 15, 2022-The Steamboat Springs Police, along with Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue, Classic Air Medical and multiple regional law enforcement, and fire agencies, will be conducting a series of active threat/mass casualty training exercises next week at the Strawberry Park Elementary School on three consecutive days, April 19-21, 2022.

“We all hope something like this will never happen in Steamboat Springs or Routt County,” said Steamboat Springs Detective Greg Griffin, who is organizing the exercise. “However, it’s imperative that local agencies train to be ready for such an act.”

The Rapid and Immediate Deployment (RAID) group, comprised of members of the Steamboat Springs Police, Routt County Sheriff and other area law enforcement agencies will conduct classroom sessions and several real-time, interagency, live exercises. Scenarios will span small and large situations including triage and trauma care conditions.

The all-day training will take place at Strawberry Park Elementary School (39620 Amethyst Dr) and runs daily from Tuesday, April 19 through Thursday, April 21. The community will see a large presence of law enforcement agencies, police officers as well as fire and EMS personnel and vehicles, including Classic Air Medical’s helicopter, in and around the school throughout the week.

In addition, the group will be utilizing Maple Street and Amethyst Dr between Steamboat Springs High School and Strawberry Park. The road will remain open but there may be heavy emergency vehicle staging and traffic at times during the exercise.

RAID training takes place annually and similar training sessions have occurred at Hayden and North Routt Charter Schools in the past years. The Steamboat Springs Police would like to thank the Steamboat Springs School District, Strawberry Park Elementary administration and staff, and exercise volunteers in advance for the opportunity to conduct this training.
